Course Description
At The American Academy, we offer a high school biology curriculum online so you can expand your knowledge anywhere, anytime. Our online biology courses for high school students and adult learners are taught by dedicated, state-licensed instructors who can enrich students’ understanding of the natural sciences. Depending on your goals, our biology courses and adults can be taken individually or as part of a full diploma program.
In semester 1 of this Biology course, students will explore the scientific method and foundational chemistry facts that will assist students in the further study of Biology. Cell structure and cellular processes, DNA, photosynthesis, and other cellular activities are covered. Students will also explore the ecosystems and the biodiversity of the earth. In addition, students discuss matter and energy, the carbon cycle, and human impacts on the different ecosystems.
In semester 2 of this Biology Course, students will learn more in-depth about DNA and physical traits. They will explore DNA, genes, chromosomes, Meiosis, and genotypes and phenotypes. Students will learn to work with Punnett Squares, understand Mendelian genetics, and discuss dominance and environmental effects on genes. Students will explore ancestry and diversity, including characteristics of organisms, evolution, phylogeny, and the fossil record. Also covered is Natural Selection, species adaptations, speciation, and issues of biodiversity, extinction, and climate change. Please download a copy of the syllabus for a full course description.
